I will try to get some travel reports written in the next day or so, but we'll see how that goes.

For the moment, it was a great weekend, it's been a great 7 weeks of this craziness. It's good to be home.

The Gothsicles - Everyone Should Play V:TES ('Cause Somebody's Gotta Be Worse Than Me) - feat. Ben Peal
    --
Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, aka "V:TES", is a classic collectible card game that I enjoy the hell out of, despite being intensely bad at it.

This track also features [info]fudjo, who is like the main Super Lord King of the Universe / rockstar of planet Earth's V:TES scene.

Production on this track happens c/o [info]downrightamazed, who is awesome.

    More WindyCon
The concert yesterday afternoon went pretty darn well, I thought. Just before that, I caught the first half of Luke Ski's, and he was in fine form and having fun. After, I hung out in the hall for awhile, talking to many nice people (including Bob Passavoy, who I never see enough of). Then I went back up to the room for awhile.

I'd got it into my head that the Masquerade was at 9:00. Well, at 8:20 I was getting ready to go down, and I looked at the program book to see where it was, and discovered that it was at 8:00.

I was downstairs by 8:25. Got backstage literally three minutes before I had to go on. Fortunately, it was before, so I got up there smoothly and got right into it... as it was announced that the masquerade winners would be announced after 9:45.

So I'm suddenly committed to an hour and fifteen.

Noooooooo problem. Rocked the house. I've done almost four hours of concert this weekend, with only two repeats ("Two Guys Kissin'" and "Rocket Ride").

Then I went to the open filk for a bit. Bill Roper, Kiki, Matt, others. Some guy noodling very well with a banjo. A new kid, Ray I'm pretty sure his name was, wrote a song yesterday morning, and he's got a very soft voice but the song was good and his guitaring is also good. Another new person, a young girl about the same age, did a couple of songs I presume are some kind of alternative folk-rock. Nice voice, good stuff.

Today: packing up, hanging out by the dealers' room for awhile, Closing Ceremonies, home.

    How's by you?

Just getting ready to go downstairs. I've had a bad headache all morning, and I just had a burger, which helps. But not as much as the ibuprofen.

The set last night was incredible. If today's 3:00 is anywhere as good, I'll blow out the walls. Eric and Jason of Toyboat did join me on stage for "PQR", and Amy McNally and I got a standing O for "Dervish", and Eric played drums again for "Rocket Ride". Gooooooood noise.

A stupid card game you can play with your dumb friends
    EVERYBODY FUCKS THE SUPERDENTIST

A card game for 4-17 people.

    Preparation:

    1. Whoever has the least offensive neck (selected by vote) chooses the dealer.
    2. The dealer shuffles the deck if he or she feels like it, then gives eight cards to all the white people playing the game. Everybody else gets an even number of cards, somewhere between between eight and twelve, depending on the dealer's guilt level. If the dealer runs out of cards, that's not my problem.
    3. The first person who has a Jack and screams "I enjoy breastmilk!" is designated Egypt. If nobody has a Jack, the dealer chooses another random number or face card to be the Egypt-selection card, and the first person to have that card and scream "I enjoy breastmilk!" will be designated Egypt. This continues until Egypt is chosen.
    4. Anyone who screams "I also enjoy breastmilk!" will be designated vice-Egypt, a purely honorary position with no real power.
    5. Once Egypt has been selected, the Dealer is no longer important and must throw his or her cards acoss the room with disdain and sulk away while everybody points and laughs.
    6. Players must stack their cards in order of their difference from the number of sex partners they have had, the greater numbers first. For example, if Trudy has had 6 sex partners, they would put 6 on the bottom of the deck, followed by 7, then 5, then 8, then 4. Anyone who has had sex with a King, Queen, or anyone named Jack can stack these cards on the bottom. Everyone else must stack them on the top.

    Gameplay:

    1. Everyone sits with their hands on their laps while leaning over the table. Egypt counts to nine, and when he or she hits seven, everybody must scream the name of their favorite dairy product (or a readily-available substitute if the player is lactose intolerant,) take the top two cards from their stack, and smack them against their forehead, allowing them to fall.
    2. All players whose cards both land on the table must simultaneously try to grab at all the cards they can (excluding the players' stacks) while screaming "MINE! MINE! MINE!" This is called table-grabbing because that's what it fucking is. Any cards which landed on the table when the dealer threw his or her little sissy-fit are also eligible for grabbing at this point. Any player whose cards both land on the floor must stomp on them while swearing creatively, and may not participate in the table-grab. Any player for whom one card landed on the table and one landed on the floor must stomp first and then grab. Anyone with a card (or cards) still stuck to their forehead must scream "Aggh! Get it off get it off!" and smack it off of their forehead before proceeding with any of the above activities, and maybe consider taking a goddamned shower.
    3. After the table-grabbing is complete, Egypt screams "Okay, that's game!" and the dealer should enter the room expectantly, asking if the game is over yet and if maybe they can play in the next game. The players should mock him or her relentlessly until he or she sulks away again.
    4. The players should take the cards they've grabbed and put them somewhere safe and potentially inappropriate. Play should then continue, following steps 1-4, until all of the players' stacks are exhausted. Players whose cards are exhausted first cannot participate in the table-grabbing. Get over it, whitey.
    5. Whoever has the most cards after all stacks are exhausted is a cheating asshole, and everybody should accuse them of this, particularly if the cheating asshole in question is Egypt. If the cheating asshole has been Egypt more than once this evening, he or she should also be slapped.
    6. The dealer can come back in the room now, I guess, if he or she promises not to be such a goddamned pussy. If playing another game, the dealer selects the new dealer, and preparation for the new game begins from step 2 of "preparation."

If anyone really plays this, I want a youtube link.

For the first time in recent memory, Randy does Smitecast alone.

So, it's largely a recap of news stories from this week and Randy's reactions to them...but there is also a good, solid bashing of the Obama administration and music from Robert Lund, Chris Waffle, The Great Luke Ski, Ted Knight, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, The Topsiders, Was (Not Was), Les Dantz, and Steve Goodie.

There is also a bit of attempted comedy that would get Randy soooo competely fired if this aired on radio. God bless the internet.

**sigh** weight off of me now...
...I've got 42 of the tracks completely recorded for the new disk now.

I'm at the point where the CD's release now hinges entirely on other people who know who they are, most of them (I'll check on one of my "Don't Swat the Fly" protesters). But yeah, until I get stuff from other people, all my work is done! Those of you who still have something, could you please let me know when you'll have that done? Thank you.

    Me? A leader?
My last big post was that I was seriously thinking of not accepting the promotion to principle validation enginner and try to move into automation developer instead. This week, things changed. All the people under me are actively campaigning for me to stay on as lead, including the most senior member of the team saying that there is no way he can do what I am doing right now. To further emphasize this, one of my India based team members pulled an all-nighter tonight so that he could finish the testing he was behind on before I left for the day instead of just coming in tomorrow to do it. Someone just pulled an all-nighter simply to impress me (he left work at 7 AM, he was supposed to leave at 10 PM). I had expected him to work over the weekend to catch up, not work all night. What in the world have I done to inspire this kind of loyalty??

Now for the other shoe dropping. On Tuesday, we had another lay-off, loosing all three requirements analysts from our group. As the validation lead, I am now directly responcible for writing requirements (along with the development lead and project manager). As part of this lay-off, it looks like the automation position I would have moved into got eliminated, so I would have been laid off had I moved into it.

So between people directly under me pushing for me to stay on as lead, and my maybe not having another position to move into, I have chosen to stay on as lead. Which should mean a raise, which is a bonus, no idea how much of one. My boss said that he will find a way to get me some automation time but it will not be full time, which I can understand. At the very least, this will be good for my resume.

My boss better be right about no more date-driven death marches like we just suffered through for the last 3 months. I got my team to deliver at miracle level (Scotty awards here), but at the cost of having no lives and working 12 hour days consistently. We can NOT do that again.

    WindyCon
All weekend. Bunches of nice folks already seen and talked to, including Uncle Vlad, Pat Sayre-McCoy, Cassie, Steven Silver, etc., etc., etc. Spent time talking with Bill Roper, Jodi Lynn Nye, and Phil Foglio. Got hellos from Bill Fawcett and Mike & Carol Resnick (who were also at my Dragon*Con banquet set and told me how good it was, whoo hoo), met Toastmast Christian Ready and the lovely Kaja Foglio. I had the guitar to play in the Con Suite, but the conversations were too varied and enjoyable for me to feel good about interrupting them. 'Salright. I've got all weekend.
    • Friday 6:00 Lilac A & C - Technobabble Quiz
    • Friday 7:00 Lilac B & D - Opening Ceremonies
    • Friday 9:30 Junior Ballroom A - Tom Smith Concert (Very Important! This is listed in the program book as being me and Eric Coleman's band Toyboat. It isn't. We simply didn't have time to get things together. But I very much want to do this next WindyCon, and having a full year of set-up should give us the time to get it right.)
    • Saturday 3:00 Junior Ballroom A - Tom Smith Concert (a completely different set)
    • Saturday 9:00 Lilac A & C - Masquerade (I'm doing halftime)
I don't think I have anything else, but ya never know. ;) Also, Amy McNally and Luke Ski have concerts, and there are a bunch of other fantastic folks running around, like Author GOH James Blaylock and Fan GOH Chris Garcia and Phyllis Eisenstein and Eric Flint and Bill Higgins and Jim C. Hines and Gene Wolfe and and and and and.

So, who's gonna be here (or is here already)?

    Mouth candy
I stopped at a Hess station for some much-needed pre-show caffeination last night, and a couple of college kids were in line in front of me, discussing their plans to drink, have some dinner, and then go to the bar. One of them was purchasing chewing tobacco, which he referred to as "mouth candy," to the great amusement of one of the other kids in line.

    Mouth...candy.

Okay, so... (a.) If chewing tobacco is MOUTH candy, What do you call NORMAL candy? And more importantly, (b.) where do you put it?

This isn't quite one of those "if it wasn't for my horse" things, but I still can't stop obsessing over it.
